CCHS speech students earn top ratings at state individual contest

All five members of Charles City’s individual speech team participating received top ratings on Saturday at Iowa High School Speech Association individual speech competition in Clear Lake.

Charles City students Shemaiah Lara, Addison Tracey, Sophia Jensen, Anders Haglund and Teagan Prigge all received Division I ratings. Tracey and Lara earned overall Division I rankings while Haglund, Jensen and Prigge each earned straight Division I ratings from the judges.

Individual All-State nominations were released Monday afternoon and none of the Charles City competitors received the distinction.

Haglund and Prigge, both juniors, earned their marks in musical theater; Tracey, a freshman, in storytelling; Jensen, a junior, in prose and Lara, a senior, in poetry.

Haglund performed “Run Away with Me” from The Unauthorized Biography of Samantha Brown, Prigge performed ”Somewhere That’s Green” from Little Shop of Horrors, Tracey performed “Regards to the Man in the Moon” from Ezra Jack Keats, Jensen performed “Death by Scrabble” from Charlie Fish and Lara performed “Learning the Hard Way” by anonymous.
