A Charles City woman who pleaded guilty to willful injury for her alleged involvement in a robbery has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

A man arrested for his alleged involvement in the same incident was found not guilty by a Floyd County jury in September.

Kathyleen Mason, age 39, was charged with first-degree robbery, a Class B felony; assault with willful injury, a Class C felony; and false imprisonment, a simple misdemeanor; for an incident in July where she and a man allegedly attempted to take cash from a person, resulting in that person received injuries including “bruising and swelling on and above the left eye, a broken nose and fractured ankle,” according to court documents.

Mason had originally pleaded not guilty and trial had been set for Sept. 13, but at a pretrial conference, Judge DeDra Schroeder accepted a guilty plea from Kathyleen Mason on the willful injury charge and set a sentencing date for last week in Floyd County District Court.

At sentencing, Schroeder sentenced Mason to an indeterminate length of time in prison not to exceed 10 years; fined her $1,370 plus 15% surcharge, but suspended those fines; and ordered her to obtain a mental health and a substance abuse evaluation and follow through with treatment recommendations.

The other person arrested in the incident, Darius Mensel Mason, age 41, was charged with the same three charges as Kathyleen Mason. Darius Mason pleaded not guilty to the charges and a trial was held in Floyd County District Court. A jury found Darius Mason not guilty on all counts and he was released from custody.
