Governor appoints Greene attorney as area district associate judge

To The Press

Gov. Kim Reynolds has announced her appointment of Elizabeth Batey as a district associate judge in Judicial Election District 2A, which includes Floyd and area counties.

Batey, of Greene, currently serves as a magistrate for Butler County and practices law with the Vickers Law Office in Greene. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and her law degree from the Drake University Law School with high honors.

She was appointed magistrate in November 2019 to fill the position of retiring magistrate Ronald Pepples.

Judicial Election District 2A consists of Floyd, Bremer, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hancock, Mitchell, Winnebago and Worth counties.

Batey fills one of the four new district associate judge positions authorized by the Legislature in this year’s session.

Other of the four new positions were filled by Erik Howe as a district court associate judge in District 5C, appointed in September; and Jessica Noll of Akron as a district court associate judge in District 3B, appointed in October.

The additional associate district court judges were part of a bill, Iowa House File 2481, that changed how Iowa Court of Appeals justices are chosen, allowing the governor to pick from five finalists, up from three; and allows the governor to select lower-level judges instead of having the district court judges making those selections.
