Three Charles City High School speech groups participated in the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Large Group Contest last Saturday at Waterloo West High School, and all came away with perfect I scores from the judges.

Two of the performances were selected to perform at the Large Group All-State Festival, to be held at Iowa State University on Feb. 18, according to speech coach Michelle Grob..

The three groups that performed last Saturday are:

  • Choral Reading – “How to Be a Decent Human Being” – Natalie King (sophomore), Jacob Jones (freshman), Blake Hoeft (sophomore), Addison Tracey (junior), Jenna Aikey (sophomore) and Savannah Baldus (sophomore).
  • Ensemble Acting –  “Gruesome Playground Injuries” – Harper McInroy and Anders Haglund (both seniors).
  • Musical Theatre –  From the musical “Assassins” – DaShawn Griffin (junior), Blake Hoeft (sophomore), Anders Haglund (senior), Jacob Diers (Junior), Teagan Prigge (senior), Kaity Heckers (sophomore) and Sophia Jensen (senior).

All three of the groups received I scores from each of their three judges for a perfect I overall rating. The ensemble acting and musical theater groups were awarded all-state honors, Grob said.

Several members of the groups will now be preparing for individual speech category competition and for the high school spring play, “Radium Girls,” Grob added.
