A trio of Charles City High School juniors were recognized for completing this semester’s CAPS training program with a penning ceremony on Friday, Feb. 24.

New to Charles City this year, the CAPS program is an elective course that gives students the opportunity to work outside the classroom and connect with area businesses to gain real-world experience with problem solving and professional development. After six weeks of work sessions, hosted at Zoetis, the students move on to the next step by taking on specific projects with local businesses and organizations.

This semester’s students are juniors Claire Girkin, Alex Wohlers, and Josette Benning.

Amy Bakker, the director of the Cedar Valley CAPS program, spoke at the penning ceremony to congratulate the three students for completing the six-week program and moving on to the next step.

“I want you to take every chance you get to push yourself outside your comfort zone,” said Bakker. “I’m really excited to see the next step of your growth for the rest of the semester.”

The penning ceremony began with special guest speaker Marine Staff Sgt. Joe Stewart speaking about the importance of leadership in both military life and the civilian world.

“At the end of the day you want to be a leader that people look up to,” said Stewart.

Each of the girls made her own presentations during the event, detailing the projects they will be working on in the community. All three will be focusing on communications, working on advertising and social media presence.

“I’m excited to work with the Chamber and be creative,” said Gerkin, who will be working to promote Charles City tourism for the Chamber of Commerce.

Likewise, Wohlers will be doing a project with Mara Bridal Shop to promote sales for upcoming formal events, and Benning will be marketing planters for Swartzrock Implement Co.

“It’s a great excuse to get out of the classroom and work with professional businesses,” said Benning.

CAPS instructor Tammy Wheeler said she is glad to see the next group of students complete this part of the program and is looking forward to see what they accomplish moving forward.

“They’re very self-driven and that makes my job very easy,” said Wheeler, congratulating the girls on their work. “I’m super excited to see where your projects take you this semester.”
