The Floyd County Fair Board bid welcome to a big crowd of guests as the community flocked to the fairgrounds for the annual Spring Fling fundraiser on Saturday, March 4.

“It’s a really good turnout,” said Fair Board President Kelsey Uetz. “Good weather always helps.”

The evening began with a social hour, giving guests a chance to browse the selection of silent auction items and purchase tickets for a variety of raffles.

More than 80 items and packages were up for bid at the silent auction with gift baskets filled with everything from chocolate and wine to summer toys and grilling equipment. Even those that couldn’t attend personally could get in on the action as fair board members posted imaged on social media, allowing those watching from home to bid by proxy.

After a social hour, the board served up dinner. Guests lined up to enjoy ribeye sandwiches, sides, salads, and a variety of homemade desserts. Live entertainment was provided by The Smokin’ Yotes out of Waverly.

Moving into the live auction, Jerry Hegtvedt of Cedar Valley Auction Co. provided auctioneering services, taking bids on items donated from several area businesses and organizations. Attendees competed for concert tickets, dinner certificates, a range of “item of the month” subscriptions and a chainsaw.

Mark Baltes was one of the big winners of the evening. His ticket was drawn for the 50/50 raffle, granting him the $760 split.

The Spring Fling is a major fundraiser for the Floyd County Fair Board. Preparations go year around, but really start ramping up about four months out.

“Our biggest thing is finding a date on the calendar,” said Uetz.

Proceeds from the evening will go toward renovations around the fairgrounds. Uetz says the board wants to complete the sidewalks and update the bleachers in the show arena.

“We’re working really hard to improve the fairgrounds and have a great county fair every year,” said Uetz. “Your donations help us do that.”
