More than a hundred art pieces representing the talent of Charles City High School students are on display at the Charles City Arts Center for the annual high school art exhibit.

“This show is something we work towards from day one of the school year,” said art instructor Brian Bohlen.

The collection is made up of works that Charles City High School art students have created over the year. From pencil drawings to pottery, a selection of the best pieces are on display to showcase the different forms of art that the students have worked on.

“You’re gonna see a little bit of everything,” said art teacher Tia McInroy. “If you can imagine a medium, it’s probably out there.”

While being selected to be part of the exhibit is an honor on its own, some pieces were singled out for being exceptional in their specific categories.

Ariana Estrada was the first place winner in the drawing category for the Charles City High School Art Exhibit.

“It’s kind of surreal,” said Ariana Estrada, who was recognized for one of her drawings of a stylized merman. “I wasn’t expecting to get first, but I’m pretty proud of it.”

On Friday, April 7, the exhibit opened with a special reception as 300 visitors flocked in and out of the Arts Center to see the art and meet with some of the students that created it.

“It’s wonderful that we’ve got a lot of people coming to see the work,” said McInroy.

With refreshments donated by Tellurian Brewing, the building was packed with people coming in to take a look at everything from paintings and portraits to clay bowls and vases.

“It’s an amazing turnout of parents and family,” said Bohlen. “Our arts students have invested a lot of time this year and done some amazing work. They’re proud to show off what they’ve done.”

The High School Art Exhibit will be on display through April 29.
