The Charles City VFW honored fallen members of the military at the Memorial Day Remembrance Program on Monday, May 29.
VFW Post 3914 organized the program with Boy Scout Troop 166, the Charles City High School Band, the American Legion Auxiliary and several speakers to perform the traditional roles in the program, from raising the colors to playing the national anthem. Pastor Patty Kellogg delivered the invocation, followed by the reading of the Memorial Day proclamation by Mayor Dean Andrews.
The guest speaker for the program was retired Air Force Lt. Col. Joanne Robinson, who recounted the history of Memorial Day and told about her own experience in the military, inspired by the sacrifice of her uncle.
“We remember today all of those in our family and friends who have died,” said Robinson.
Following Robinson’s remarks, a member of the Legion Auxiliary placed the memorial wreath before the playing of taps and a final benediction by Pastor Kellogg.
After the ceremony, the crowd was invited inside the VFW for a freewill pork roast lunch, served with mashed potatoes, green beans and homemade desserts.
