It was a colorful afternoon at the Charles City Public Library on Tuesday as this week’s “Get Messy” program invited kids to decorate paper banners and plastic shower curtains.

Painting by hand … or feet, or spray bottle, the attending kids spent about 10 minutes applying colors to the designated items before realizing they could also paint themselves and each other. This resulted in a free-for-all of kids deciding to use Children’s Librarian Stacey Leerhoff and parent Mariah Ohlendorf as their canvas and the adults returning the favor.

“I didn’t intend for this,” laughed Library Director Annette Dean as she tried to avoid getting caught in the crossfire of, thankfully, washable paint.

Next week’s “Get Messy” activity will have kids making homemade ice cream, scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 3:30 p.m.
