Contested races in Charles City Council and School Board elections in November

By Bob Steenson, bsteenson@charlescitypress.com

There will be contested races for Charles City Council and the Charles City Board of Education in the municipal and school district elections Nov. 7, as well as a couple of races in other Floyd County communities as more candidates than available seats turned in papers by the end of the nomination filing period, Thursday at 5 p.m.

All three incumbents on the Charles City Council, Keith Starr, Phillip Knighten and Phoebe Pittman, have filed to seek another four-year term in office.

They will be joined on the ballots for the City Council election by challengers Patsy Beaver, Joanne Robinson and Joshua Neupert.

There will be at least one new member of the Charles City School Board after this year’s election, as incumbent Director Janiece Bergland decided to not seek another term.

The other incumbent whose four-year term is up and who is running again, Pat Rottinghaus, will be joined on the ballot by challengers Dara Jaeger and Bruce Koebrick.

Both the City Council and the Board of Education in Charles City consist of at-large representatives, meaning the top three vote-getters in the council race and the top two vote-getters in the School Board race will win the available positions.

None of the city or school board elections are partisan – the candidates do not run as members of a political party.

County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Gloria Carr said that applications for absentee ballots have been coming into her office, especially for the school district election which will have the Charles City High School renovation and auditorium additional bonding proposal on the ballot.

Absentee ballots will be mailed out and in-person advance voting at the Auditor’s Office will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 18, Carr said.

People who have filed for available positions in other Floyd County communities are:

• Floyd mayor – Trevis O’Connell.

• Floyd City Council (3 seats) – Jeremy Stewart, Doug Davis and Cleone King

• Marble Rock City Council (2 seats) – Kaylah Schweizer, John Phillip Marzen, Bradley A. Rohwedder and Lynn Kingery.

• Rudd mayor – Jeff Buland.

There were no candidates who filed papers for these available seats:

• Marble Rock mayor.

• Rudd City Council (3 seats).

Seats where no candidates filed to be on the ballot will be decided by write-in votes, Carr said.
