Marble Rock went back in time this past weekend as the Marble Rock Historical Society hosted the Sixth Annual Pioneer Activities Day on Saturday, Oct. 7.
The cool October morning made for a perfect day to gather by the campfire and enjoy a breakfast of homemade biscuits topped with hot gravy or hand churned butter.
“It’s great,” said Clayton Black of the Marble Rock Historical Society. “We went through 10 dozen biscuits.”
This is the sixth year that the historical society has put on the Pioneer Activities Day, with tables set up for apple cider pressing, wood carving, wool dying and more to demonstrate the kind of things that were common in the daily life of early settlers.
New to this year was a table for herbal remedies, homemade ice cream and mule rides down the street.
“We had a good turnout, so we’re happy about that,” said Historical Society President Diane Black. “It’s getting bigger every year.”
The event was centered on downtown Marble Rock’s Beelar Cabin, but volunteers were on site to guide people to neighboring historical buildings from the old-time barbershop to the bank.
The Historical Society maintains seven buildings now around downtown Marble Rock, open on Saturdays or by appointment for those interested in historical information. Black says that opening a gift shop and renovating the old west façade are among the next projects on the group’s list as they work to preserve the city’s history.
