It was a spooky night for a walk in the park as more than two dozen area businesses and organizations set up booths for the 28th annual SpookWalk on Monday, Oct. 23.
Hosted by Main Street Charles City, the circus themed displays lined up along Riverside Trail as hundreds of kids walked the path for tricks and treats. From the Charles City Fire Department to Pure Prairie Poultry, each organization brought their own style to the event with tents, costumes, music, and more. Many regulars of the SpookWalk needed little direction, knowing exactly when and where to set up for the show.

“I thought it was very well organized and it was great to see a lot of our community’s businesses take part in the event,” said Main Street Charles City board member Ryan Venz, one of the judges of the event.
Along with offering a thrill for the kids, each booth was in competition to be recognized by a trio of judges for bragging rights as the best booth of the show.
Rating booths on both use of theme and overall effort, the judges selected Valero Renewables and Cambrex as their top choices, respectively.
Honorable mentions also went to each judge’s personal choice, with Zoetis, Unggoy Broadband, and Comprehensive Systems all being recognized for their efforts.
“My favorite part was how all the booths really bought into the theme,” said Mayor Dean Andrews, who also took part in the judging contest.
Warm weather brought out a big turnout as the line of families stretched all the way to the library with eager kids in costumes waiting for their turn to walk the path.
“I’m happy to see SpookWalk serve the community as Charles City’s Halloween event,” said event coordinator Eve Welton. “Thank you to all the organizations for your participation.”
