Charles City Fire Department responds to house fire

To The Press
The Charles City Fire Department was dispatched to the 500 block of North Illinois Avenue at 9:15 a.m. Monday after smoke was reported being visible at the residence.
According to the CCFD, on arrival crews were informed that all occupants were out of the building.
Firefighters entered the building and found a fire concentrated around the furnace, according to a report by the department.
“Though the fire was spreading quickly, our teams made quick work of the fire and were able to extinguish it before it spread throughout the dwelling,” the report said. “Unfortunately there was extensive damage to a portion of the residence.”
Also responding were the Floyd Fire Department and Colwell Fire Department. The Charles City Police Department assisted at the scene.
“Though the final report has not been completed, everyone please remember to check your furnace filters and inspect your furnace prior to its use for winter,” the CCFD said. “We are coming up on some cold weather and they will start to be used more frequently.”
The department also reminded people to never leave portable heaters and heating blankets unattended and always ventilate the area if any alternative fuel source heaters are used.
“Also, time change is coming up and it’s always a good reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detector,” the CCFD report said.
