Eight Charles City high school students received a Seal of Biliteracy on Thursday, May 9.

“The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a district to recognize students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages,” said Spanish instructor Angie Holzer.

Established in California in 2011 and introduced to Iowa in 2018, the Seal of Biliteracy program is relatively new to the state.

“Here at Charles City, this is the first year this recognition was offered,” said Holzer.

“We had several students attempt the four different tests in Spanish,” said Holzer. “These four were each a standardized test given by a proctor in which students had to test at least at an intermediate 2 level in speaking, reading, listening, and writing.”

Of all the students that attempted the test, Morgan Bettesworth, Keely Collins, Anton Dittmer, Adrian Ibarra, Emily Jones, Jameson Mayhew, Zadie Pittman, and Destiny Vargas were successful in reaching the high standards of Spanish proficiency needed to earn the seal.

One more student in the school has taken the test and is still awaiting their test results.

Holzer presented the qualifying students with their certificates on Thursday, but expressed her pride in all of the students that made the attempt.

Along with a certificate of excellence, each student will receive a Seal of Biliteracy on their high school transcrips as well as a medal to wear during graduation.

“I am so proud of our students and their willingness to take the test to begin with,” said Holzer. “And then extra proud of those who met or exceeded the proficiency level required.”
