The Charles City High School Choir closed out the school year with the 2024 Choir Pops Concert in the Comet Gym on Tuesday, May 7.
Directed by AJ Weber, the concert demonstrated the results of the choir instructor’s first year in Charles City, with students performing many of the pieces they took to large group contest in Decorah.
The concert began with the freshmen and sophomore singers of the Comet Choir demonstrating what they’ve learned over the last year, singing “For the Beauty of the Earth,” “Salmo 150,” and “With a Voice of Singing.”
Following the Comet Choir, chorus members Camryn Hoeft and Ana Tutu each presented their own solo performances, with Hoeft singing “Caro mio ben” and “American Lullaby” while Tutu sang “Sun Don’t Set in the Morning” and “Siyahamba,” songs that earned the soloists top marks at contest.
Moving onto the Chamber Choir, the students performed “Fa Una Canzona,” “Afternoon on a Hill,” and “Lamentations of Jaremiah,” performances that also earned them a 1 rating at contest.
“There are lot of talented kids,” said Weber.
Soloist Lillie Mohring performed “When daisies pied” and “Tu lo sai,” while the Bass Clef Choir demonstrated their rendition of “Somebody’s Callin’ My Name.”
Brining out all the juniors and seniors, the Concert Choir performed “Agnus Dei,” “Ballade to the Moon,” and “Wade in de Water.”
Afterwards, Weber recognized each of the senior members of the choir, congratulating Kristen Bachman, Jacob Diers, Connor Diez, Anton Dittmer, Thomas Field, Kayona Flowers, DaShawn Griffin, Alexander Haus, Elayna Hemesath, Aden Hunnie, Adrian Ibarra, Emily Jones, Olivia Kreger, Taylor Myhre and Haley White for helping make his first year at Charles City a memorable one.
The seniors, in turn, presented Weber with a commemorative gift, giving him his first photo board of a graduating class, along with a novelty t-shirt.
Following the senior slideshow, the choir invited alumni to the stands to close out the concert by singing the schools Alma Mater.
