Charles City area firefighters called to home fire southeast of city

Press Staff Report

Charles City and area firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a home in the Wedgewood Estate neighborhood southeast of Charles City on Tuesday, May 28, shortly before 11 p.m.

According to a report from the Charles City Fire Department, when they arrived they saw smoke coming from the rear of the home around a garage.

Also responding were the Colwell and Floyd fire departments.

“Crews made entry in the garage and found that the fire melted an overhead waterline, helping knock down the flames,” the report said. “The home suffered significant smoke damage to the lower garage as well as heavy smoke in the remaining portions of the home. Thankfully all residents were able to escape the home without injury.”

“We also need to thank the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office for helping with the traffic,” the CCFD report said. “Without them stopping vehicles we would not have been able to refill our tanker trucks with water.”

The department asked that the public not try to drive by the scenes of events such as fires and accidents “to catch a glimpse.”

“The extra vehicles in the area severely slows down other emergency vehicles and can easily become a secondary incident,” the report said.
