Fresh produce is available to anybody in need of some extra vegetables as Floyd County Extension puts on its Free Produce Giveaway.

Throughout August and September, volunteers are setting up on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon at Lion’s Rose Garden along Riverside Drive, where people can come to pick out a selection of locally donated produce items.

Radishes, peppers, tomatoes, beans and more were available at the giveaway’s first event of the season on Saturday, Aug. 3, but the selection will vary from week to week.

“Every week changes depending on what people donate,” said volunteer Dawn Kozisek.

For those interested in donating produce to the cause, donations can be dropped off ahead of the giveaway on Saturday mornings or at the Extension Office during the week.

The produce is free, but the group does accept freewill donations that will go to support CC Cares’ annual Thanksgiving Day dinner.

Leftover produce at the end of the day is taken to Messiah’s Food Pantry.

“It’s a very nice program,” said Kozisek.
