A man whose alleged apprehension caused a “soft lockdown” at a Charles City school is facing charges of burglary and domestic abuse assault, according to records filed in Floyd County District Court.

Stone Harrison Adams, of Riceville, age 29, allegedly entered a residence in the 1700 block of Clark Street where his former live-in girlfriend lived on Oct. 3, “having no right to be there,” then went upstairs to the bedroom “and started to punch and kick” a person there in the head, “causing redness and bruising and pain,” the criminal complaints said.

Adams was arrested on charges of first degree burglary, a Class B felony, and domestic abuse assault causing injury, first offense, a serious misdemeanor.

A non-contact order was issued for an alleged victim by a district court magistrate and Adams was released on his own recognizance.

Immaculate Conception Catholic School went into a “soft lockdown” for a short while as a precautionary measure on Thursday, Oct. 3, as law enforcement officers allegedly pursued Adams then apprehended him.

The incident resulted in a foot chase with the suspect fleeing toward the school and ultimately being apprehended on the school’s ball diamond, police said.

“We ended up taking him into custody near IC and until we got him into custody we didn’t want kids out on the playground,” said Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson.

The lockdown was released at about 2:20 p.m. that day.

A preliminary hearing for Adams is scheduled for Oct. 23, although if a trial information is filed by the county attorney’s office before then – as is often the case – then the next appearance will be arraignment, at a date to be listed in the trial information.
