Elementary school students got in the spirit of things for the upcoming SpookWalk in Charles City on Monday, Oct. 28, by taking part in both a coloring contest and candy guessing game contest.

Students in preschool through second grade had the opportunity to color special coloring sheets distributed by the SpookWalk Committee of Main Street Charles City to be turned back in for judging, while students in grades 3-4 had a chance to guess how many pieces of candy were in the SpookWalk candy jar.

Danielle Zimmerman of Lincoln School and Samuel Harris of I.C. School each won a loaded candy jar and a special SpookWalk Budge Pass after coming closest among their respective schoolmates in their guess. Zimmerman said 195 and Harris 205, with the candy jars each containing 193 pieces of candy.

The nursing and assisted living facilities in town also got in on a little SpookWalk fun this year by getting to compete for a jar of candy themselves, as well as bragging rights.

Mike Cotton of Riverside Assisted Living was the closest guesser on the number of pieces of candy in a candy jar.

Dean Sears at 9th Street Chautauqua and Jim Mitchell at 11th Street Chautauqua each guessed 200 to win the jar at their respective homes. Mike Cotton was the winner at Riverside Assisted Living with a guess of 187. Apple Valley Place opted to just eat the candy!

The winning coloring contest submissions from each school are pictured below. Each school class winner received a Spookwalk Budge Pass, which will allow them to jump to the front of the line Monday.

The 29th Annual SpookWalk will take place Monday, Oct. 28, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. along the riverfront trail starting from behind the Charles City Public Library and First Baptist Church.

The event is free of charge for youth up through grade six to dress up in their Halloween costumes and walk the decorated trail to 31 different treat stations hosted by various businesses and organizations. Youth should be accompanied by an adult, dressed for the weather and bring something to carry their treats in.
