It was a big weekend for the Charles City Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter as the group had multiple events scheduled ahead of Veterans Day.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, VFW Post 3914 had volunteers camped out at Theisen’s for their Buddy Poppy sale, which serves as a major fundraising event for the organization.
“It goes toward the veterans and their family members to help them out when they’re in need,” said Nick Klinetop.
Later that evening, more activities were had at the post hall, with a special Veterans Day dance party.
“We’re just gonna have a good time,” said Phillip Knighten.
Starting off with a pork loin sandwich dinner and a short program, the evening featured military-themed drink specials, raffle drawings and live music from the Beaver Creek Band.
The program is part of a larger effort from the VFW to increase its presence in Charles City, encouraging the younger generation of veterans to get involved with the organization.
“We’re hoping to get as many veterans in here as we can,” said Knighten.
Non-military guests are also welcome at the VFW hall, which serves a dinner every Thursday evening and a breakfast every Sunday morning, generally for a freewill donation or low cost.
“That’s our biggest thing,” said Denise Hetrick, “trying to let everybody know it’s not just for veterans or the military.”
