A group of singers from a wide area is planning to perform an ecumenical, community-wide Christmas cantata next month.

Consisting of 25 voices coming from seven churches within a 40-mile radius, the Sounds of the Season group will present two performances of “Good News From Home.”

The first performance will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Floyd Grace Methodist Church. The second performance is the same day at 5 p.m. at Rockford First Methodist Church.

Rhonda Higby, the director, said the performances are the brain storm of Pastor Chan Kim from Rockford.

The original plan was that Kim, his wife, and four church members would share some Christmas spirit with the congregation.

“As an idea that’s time had come, it exploded into the current size rapidly,” said Higby, who said this is her inaugural role as director.

“Some of the choir members have experience with singing in public, others do not,” Higby said. “But their mantra is have fun, glorify God, and bless others.”

The performances are free to the public, with light snacks and fellowship following.
