The Charles City Community School Board selected new officers during its organizational meeting on Monday, Nov. 25.
During the organizational meeting, board members Kathryn Fox and Josh Mack nominated Bruce Koebrick to serve as the school board’s new president for the term. Koebrick was unanimously voted in.
Mack and previous Board President Dr. David Schrodt were each nominated for the vice-president position, with the board voting in favor of Mack. Danielle Bonnstetter was also selected to continue as the board’s secretary and treasurer.
In the public comment portion of the meeting, Jim Davis spoke to the board about the difficulties of public office, in particular for school board members as they must account for both the spending of tax dollars and the wellbeing of children.
“It’s the toughest public service job in the community,” said Davis.
Also at the meeting, Jenna Steffen and Lesley Milius of ISU Extension offered a short presentation about the recent Partnering With Parents program. Open to parents of Washington and Lincoln Elementary students, the three-week workshop offered lessons on handling the challenges of parenthood as kids enter school age, from understanding temperament to providing positive discipline.
“We had great great reviews and comments from the participants,” said Milius. “We’re looking at doing round two in March.”
In regular business, the board approved two requests to the state’s School Budget Review Committee (SBRC), asking for adjustments to the district’s spending authority to account for open enrolled students and EL students not included in the district’s previous certified enrollment count.
With the reorganization, board meetings will now be held only on the second Monday of the month, with the next meeting scheduled for Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
A series of more informal board workshops are also planned, with a workshop concerning the plans and funding options regarding the high school building improvements set for Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
