Floyd has Kid’s Christmas Store after icy delay

Kids in Floyd got to do some Christmas shopping on their own as the Kid’s Christmas Store opened on Sunday, Dec. 15.
Initially scheduled for Saturday morning, the weekend’s freezing rain forced a one-day postponement.
Organized by Floyd Grace United Methodist Church, the event invites kids from zero to 18 to purchase up to five gifts for 25 cents each that they can gift to their friends and family for the holiday.
“They can either do the shopping themselves or we have people here to guide them in the right direction,” said Wyona Stewart, who has been one of the event organizers since taking it over from the Lions Club.
With volunteers on hand to handle the wrapping and labeling, the Kid’s Christmas Store gives children the chance to give out their own Christmas surprises out of a selection of trinkets, ornaments, decorations, and stuffed animals.
Stewart says that they usually get up to 100 kids coming through to shop for gifts and hoped that the sudden change in plans didn’t keep anybody from being able to make it.
The event was a little extra special this year as the Lions Club, whose Saturday plans were also disrupted by the ice, brought Santa Claus in to meet with the young shoppers.
