The Charles City Police Department has a new set of ballistic gear thanks to the efforts of six local businesses.

Mike Molstead Motors, Larry Pump CPA, First Security Bank, First Citizens National Bank, Farm Bureau Financial Services and Mick Gage Plumbing and Heating chipped in for $36,000 in new helmets and shields for the Police Department.

“We’re very appreciative of it,” said Police Chief Hugh Anderson.

Anderson and several officers met up with the business owners on Friday to thank them for the donation.

Though rare, Charles City police officers have been fired at during dangerous situations. Anderson said the new gear is rated to withstand shots from more powerful firearms than their current gear, which will make it safer for officers to perform entries.

“It was great having all the businesses here step forward for us,” said Anderson. “It’s something we didn’t have budgeted, but it’s something we probably needed.”
