Friday was the last day of work for Dr. John Moellers, who retired after 25 years of providing veterinary care for animals at the Charles City Animal Clinic.
“It just felt like the time was right,” said Moellers.
“It’s kind of bittersweet,” said John’s wife, Carol Moellers, who ran the office with her husband. “A lot of people have been coming in and saying goodbye.”
Originally starting in Greene 38 years ago, the Moellers decided to expand to Charles City in 1999, purchasing the practice from John Flint. Initially operating out of a confined trailer, in 2004 they bought an old bean field at the edge of the city and built a new clinic to work from.
Since then, Moellers has treated countless pets and livestock in the Floyd and Butler county area.
“The time goes by so fast,” said Carol Moellers. “You don’t realize it.”
Earlier this year, after consolidating the Greene and Charles City clinics into just the Charles City location, Moellers decided that it was time to retire.
“I’m going to miss it,” said John Moellers. “We’ve had so many wonderful clients and have enjoyed working with their pets and livestock over the years.”
Friday was the last day for Moellers to tend to furry patients at the clinic. He concluded his career by vaccinating a newly adopted puppy and then skipping out early to pick up a Dairy Queen Blizzard.
While Moellers’ clinic will be closing, the office’s doors won’t be staying closed for very long. Avenue of the Saints Animal Hospital will be relocating into the building, with plans to be open at the new location on May 5.
Whether pet owners decide to transfer their pet’s care to the new occupants or see another vet entirely, former Charles City Animal Clinic customers are asked to stop in and get copies of their pets’ records by April 25.
In the meantime, the Moellers say they are looking forward to their retirement, with plans to enjoy family and travel in their newfound free time.
“I’ve got a whole list of things I’m looking forward to doing,” said John Moellers.
“Things that we haven’t been able to do for a while,” said Carol Moellers.
