Kids rolled into the Charles City Public Library to learn how to make a tasty chocolate treat during the Get Messy program on Tuesday, April 29,

At the after school program, kids got to make their own handmade Tootsie Rolls.

“I’m not a huge Tootsie Roll fan, but these taste great,” said Children’s Librarian Stacey Leerhoff.

Mixing common baking ingredients like cocoa powder, corn syrup, powdered sugar, vanilla, and dried milk, the kids learned how to press and roll the chocolate concoction into bite-sized pieces.

“It was surprisingly easy to make,” said Library Director Annette Dean.

Coming up next week for the Get Messy program, the library will be making cardboard box crafts.
