On Monday, May 5, teachers Kirsten Field and Melinda Masters brought their classes of approximately 25 fourth graders from Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Charles City, to tour the Floyd Mitchell Chickasaw Landfill.

The tour was led by landfill Director Christian Fox, who was accompanied by landfill board member Jerry Joeger, said Lori J. King, the office manager and landfill operator for the FMC Landfill.

“Fox showed the students the active landfill site while employees Collin Brinkman and Ed Shindelar worked with local haulers and customers to landfill garbage,” King said.

Fox explained the types of waste the landfill receives and noted that 30,697 tons were taken in 2024.

He also emphasized the importance of recycling, showcasing landfill areas dedicated to recycling and the Regional Collection Center for hazardous chemicals, King said.

“The students were engaged, asking numerous questions, including one even asking about employment at the landfill,” Kind said. “For fun, they weighed themselves on the new scale recently installed at the landfill, collectively totaling just over a ton.”
