NIACC launching professional pilot degree program in August

To The Press
North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City has announced the launch of a new aviation professional pilot Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, set to begin in the fall of 2025.
The program, delivered in partnership with North Iowa Air Service, will provide students with the knowledge and hands-on training needed for careers in the aviation industry, the community college said.
“North Iowa Air Service is thrilled to partner with NIACC for the Aviation Professional Associate of Applied Science degree,” said Todd Kyle, owner/president of Charles City Aeronautics Inc., doing business as North Iowa Air Service at the Mason City Municipal Airport.
“My grandfather began this business in 1957 teaching people how to fly in North Iowa,” Kyle said. “We are thrilled to continue and expand that tradition with NIACC. We look forward to working with them to grow and expand this program for years to come.”
The program, which will be part of NIACC’s Skilled Trades Division, is a five-semester curriculum that combines classroom instruction at NIACC with hands-on lab and flight training at the Mason City Airport.
“The program offers students a comprehensive educational experience, covering essential topics such as aerodynamics, flight operations, navigation and aviation safety,” NIACC said.
Students will gain critical certifications and real-world flying experience, preparing them for a wide range of aviation careers, including private and commercial piloting, flight instruction and other specialized roles within the industry.
“This program is an incredible opportunity for students passionate about aviation to turn their dreams into reality,” said Laura Wood, dean of agriculture and skilled trades.
“By offering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, we’re setting our graduates up for success in one of the most exciting and rewarding industries out there,” Wood said.
Graduates of the Aviation Professional Pilot AAS program are expected to leave NIACC with the skills and certifications required for a wide range of aviation careers.
Enrollment for the program is now open, with classes set to begin in August.
