Charles City Elks Lodge No. 418 celebrated the history of the American Flag on Saturday, June 14, with its annual Flag Day commemoration ceremony.
“It was fun,” said Jessica Perry. “Beautiful weather to celebrate our flag.”
Following the singing of the national anthem by Will Holzer, the program opened with an introduction from Elks Exalted Ruler Steve Mills, who called on the Order of Elks officers to tell the significance of the American Flag’s principles of charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity.
“By them, we teach love of country and of our countrymen and loyalty to our American way of life,” said Mills.
After a prayer by Chaplain Deb Carolan, Erica Troyna spoke about the history of the American Flag and its various incarnations from the colonial Pine Tree Flag of 1775 to the 13 stars and stripes designed by Betsy Ross to the modern 50-star flag that America has flown since Hawaii and Alaska’s statehood.
Assisting in the program’s demonstration were Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts Brynna Schaefer, Jacob Alton, Bryce Voight, Kevin Williams and Bryer Schaefer, who carried out each flag as it was called.
The service closed with Holzer singing “God Bless America,” followed by the Pledge of Allegiance from the Elks and audience.
“I appreciate everyone coming out today to support the Elks honoring our flag,” said Perry.
