Lundberg: More than 100 trees planted at Floyd County Fairgrounds

Late Monday morning Charles City High School teacher Jim Lundberg’s horticulture class received more practice planting trees at the Floyd County Fairgrounds.

“We planted 11 trees out here,” Lundberg said. The assortment included oaks, serviceberry, maple, river birch, pagoda dogwood, magnolia, red birch and yellow tree.

The trees were purchased from Otto’s Oasis with the help of District Foresters Greg Heidebrink and Jason Walker.

Lundberg applied for and was awarded a Trees for Teens grant which enabled the purchase of the 11 assorted trees.

According to Lundberg over 100 trees have been planted at the fairgrounds through this grant. The purpose behind the grant is to create diversity and to allow continual healthy tree growth. Students planted, watered and mulched the new trees. They will also take on the responsibility of watering the trees at least once a week.

This is the second tree planting the high school horticulture class has completed this year. Previously students have planted trees for the Community Improvement Association for the purpose of replacing ash trees throughout various Charles City parks.
