BRIEFLY OmniTel Communications announces 6th annual food drive

OmniTel Communications will be holding a month-long food drive through Nov. 16.

Donations of non-perishable food items can be dropped off at OmniTel’s corporate office located at 608 E. Congress in Nora Springs, or at the OmniTel Communications Rudd location at 510 Chickasaw St. in Rudd. All of the proceeds will be donated to several area food banks in Floyd, Mitchell, Butler, and Cerro Gordo counties.

OmniTel will provide a matching donation in support of this program and area food banks.

Wary of euro rise, European Central Bank mulls more stimulus

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The European Central Bank is edging closer to unleashing more monetary stimulus on top of the 1.1 trillion euros ($1.2 trillion) it is already pumping into the eurozone’s less than impressive economic recovery.

While no immediate action is expected at Thursday’s meeting in Malta, investors will look for hints from ECB President Mario Draghi that the bank is willing or preparing to extend the stimulus effort rather than let it end next year.

IMF: Mideast growth ‘subdued’

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The International Monetary Fund said Wednesday a fall in oil prices and deepening turmoil in parts of the Middle East will keep growth in the region subdued this year at 2.5 percent.

Masood Ahmed, IMF director of the Middle East and Central Asia, said oil-exporting countries are facing tough choices as they brace for a $360 billion drop in revenues this year due to a drop in oil prices globally.

Billionaire starts super PAC

WASHINGTON (AP) — Billionaire New York investor Carl Icahn said Wednesday he is creating a $150 million super PAC focused on revising corporate tax law.

Icahn will use his super PAC to press Congress to pass legislation that stops U.S. companies from moving their profits overseas to take advantage of lower tax rates — a practice known as “inversions.”
