Iowan accused of using hammer on dog expected to change plea

MASON CITY (AP) — A plea change hearing has been scheduled for a Mason City man accused of using a hammer to beat his dog.

Mason City television station KIMT reports that the hearing for 63-year-old George Harrington is set for Nov. 16. He pleaded not guilty in July to animal torture.

Police say officers called to Harrington’s residence in June found an injured boxer mix. Police say the dog was taken to a veterinarian, who euthanized it because of head injuries the vet said were caused by a hammer.
