Iowa a Capella group ‘Route 66’ to reunite for last concert

To the Press

In the ever changing realm of music, the “vocal variety” group seems to be a thing of the past. With the advent of the new electro music and the beating designs of Rap and Hip Hop there seems to be an a Capella void of sorts.

If you are of past generations, you may have fond memories of standing at the street corner snapping your fingers to the rhythmic beat of the doo-woppers singing about their ladies with a low bass singer beating out the tempos.

One local vocal variety group stands out as one of the few true vocal quintets that have graced the Midwest in the past years. Route 66 was a vocal quintet that was active in the late 80’s through late 90’s here in Iowa.

Among their accolades, the group opened for Tom Jones, The Oak Ridge Boys, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell as well as many other memorable performances.

Due to family commitments and other important factors, the group disbanded in 2000 never to regroup again.

But now, the wait is over!

Route 66 will be performing one last time as a farewell performance right here in North Iowa.

To support the Homes for Haiti mission, a fundraising event has been organized and Route 66 has agreed to regroup with all the original members for a last time performance. This musical benefit will raise funds to go directly to Haiti for the Homes for Haiti initiative.

Admission is free and there will be a free will offering as well as Route 66 CDs on sale that were originally recorded in September 1992 at a live performance at the NIACC auditorium.

Also performing will be other local musical talent.

“Get Your Kicks with Route 66 & Friends” is planned for Friday, Dec. 18, 2015 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee Street, Charles City. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
