Along time ago (38 years) in a place far, far away (Hollywood), a movie came out that people still love today. That movie was the first in the epic “Star Wars” series. The newest comes out this

month.

The story

The first movie starts with a boy named Luke Skywalker finding the plans for a space station called the Death Star hidden in a robot named R2-D2. Luke figures out who R2-D2 is taking the plans to, and the man, Ben Kenobi, tells Luke that Luke’s father was once a member of an elite group called the Jedi knights. Ben Kenobi teaches Luke about the ways of the Jedi, and, with the help of some new friends, Luke destroys the Death Star and defeats the evil Darth Vader.

What people thought

People loved the original movie. It made more money than any before it. In fact, when it was rereleased in 1977, a few months after its initial release, it beat its old record and once again became the movie that had made the most money ever.

People loved it so much, in fact, that the creator, George Lucas, made two more in the early 1980s and then three others in 1999, 2002 and 2005. Those three told the story of Luke Skywalker’s parents and life before he was born.

Episode VII, “The Force Awakens,” is the new movie.

It takes places 30 years after where “Return of the Jedi” (which came out in 1983) left off. Some of the characters from the original three movies will appear, and some new ones, too.

Real history

The term “star wars” took on a new meaning in 1983 when President Ronald Reagan started a program called the Strategic Defense Initiative. The program, which many people called Star Wars, was created to form a system that would defend the United States if another country attacked it. At the time, the U.S. was involved in the Cold War with the Soviet Union, which meant that the two countries weren’t fighting but weren’t getting along, either.

President Reagan thought the Star Wars program would be a way to keep the United States safe, but after a few years, the project was abandoned.
