Muscatine High School closing baby nursery after 25 years

MUSCATINE (AP) — Muscatine High School says it will close the school’s nursery next year, citing the rapid decline in teen pregnancy.

The Muscatine Journal reports that the nursery was opened in 1990 to provide day care services so teen parents could remain in school and graduate.

The nursery has been operated by the school, the Muscatine Community Y and Trinity Public Health. It will close at the end of the current school year.

Diana Broderson, director of Family Programs at the Y, says funds that have been used for the nursery will be used to boost teen pregnancy prevention efforts.

Officials say any parents still at the high school can work with Trinity Public Health to find child care for their babies.
