A Waverly split
Charles City’s girls outbowl Go-Hawks on the road, boys fall by 9 pins
The Charles City girls bowling team rolled a 106-pin win against Waverly-Shell Rock on Friday in the Go-Hawks’ home alley. The boys fell by nine pins in what the Go-Hawks head coach called the best competition his team has been in.
The face off was popular. There was little room left for spectators to maneuver in the gallery at the Waverly Bowl Inn. Fans from both teams attended and filled the alley with eardrum rattling cheers, especially for strikes.
Arayh Nelson led the girls with a 324-pin two-game series, which was six short of her season high. She tied her high score of the season in her first game at Waverly by rolling a 176.
“(She) got a new ball this week and she’s been bowling well,” Comets head coach Doug Bohlen said. “
In the baker games, the lineup of Nelson, Macy Ross, Baili Girkin, Miji Cotton and Kate Sickman the Comets started strong with a 163 in the first game and then tripped up with a 98.
“The girls won because their baker games were pretty consistent, except for the second one,” he said.
The girls total team score was 2,103 to 1,997 for the Go-Hawks.
The girls are now 3-1 on the season.
“With the boys, it was a struggle all night long,” Bohlen said. “These lanes in Waverly are typically hard to score on.”
The Waverly boys overcame a 40-pin deficit late in the match to claim the win 2,847 to 2838. In the fifth baker game, Waverly put up a 253 to Charles City’s 206.
“We missed spares we never usually miss is what cost the boys,” Bohlen said.
Brady Girkin had the high series for the Comets with 430. Kaleb Ross had the high game of 232.
The varsity lineup was Girkin, Ross, Tyler Brockney, Hunter Koebrick, Drew Mitchell and Hunter Brockney.
The boys are also 3-1 on the season.
