Hain shines in road loss to Cowboys

A fast start and a 22-point performance from senior Tony Hain were not enough to get Rockford the win against Clarion-Goldfield on Saturday night.
The Cowboys held an early five-point lead but a 3-point field goal from freshman Jacob Staudt plus an old-fashioned, three-point play from Hain gave the Warriors a 6-5 lead midway through the first quarter.
The Warriors led 13-8 with about a minute and a half remaining in the first quarter, but a late run by the Cowboys would even things up at 13-13 going into the break.
RRMR looked to be seizing control during the second quarter off the strength of two consecutive 3-point field goals from Staudt in addition to a made free throw attempt to give the warriors a six-point, 20-14 lead with about six minutes to play in the half.
The Cowboys pulled to within 20-17 when a Hain two-point layup got the lead back up to 22-17. This would be when the Warriors start to lose control of the game, however. The Cowboys went on to end the half on a 15-0 run to lead 32-22.
For the entirety of the second half the Warriors were forced to play catch-up, but were never able to get the Cowboy lead to any lower than six points on the strength of a 10-point, third quarter performance from Hain, who scored a total of 17 points in the second half of the game, which largely kept RRMR in contention down the stretch.
A nine-point outing from senior Dalton Winters also helped to keep things close later on in the game, but in the end, though, the Cowboy’s lead could not be overcome and they captured the 61-53 win. The loss drops the Warriors to 1-6 on the season.
“We played hard for the majority of the game,” said head coach Ben Klapperich after the game. “We played with a lot of energy and intensity, but just fell short. Second chance points were big. We gave them a lot of second chance opportunities.”
Klapperich went on to compliment the strong effort put forth by Tony Hain: “Tony played a really nice game for us offensively and defensively,” Coach Klapperich commented. Hain led all scorers with 22 points on the night in addition to coming up with a couple of steals.”
