Staff Report

Charles City senior multi-sport athlete Sarah Barry is the first recipient of the Amy (Boley) Heiter Scholarship Award.

Requisite for the award include “Being a Team Player”, “Never Giving Up”, “Always Supportive of Others” and “Accomplished High Ideals”.

“Amy was a give-back person and she would have picked Sarah Barry herself,” Amy’s mother, Jean Boley stated in a press release. “Sarah played basketball unselfishly.”

Barry, who plans to attend Simpson College to study elementary education, received a $500 scholarship. The scholarship award will continue for 11 more years. A plaque will be displayed at the high school listing past and future recipients.

Amy (Boley) Heiter was a star basketball player at Charles City High School. A 3-point threat who loved to celebrate after draining a three, Amy continued her basketball career at NIACC.

In late October of 2013, Amy was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer. The 23-year-old was a newlywed and a senior at the University of Northern Iowa double majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.

Despite sustaining three surgeries, numerous rounds of chemotherapy and many other medical procedures, Amy courageously continued with her student-teaching experience so she could graduate and earn a teaching certificate by the Iowa Board of Education.

Despite a resilient year-and-a-half battle, Amy died on April 29, 2015.
