Funeral services for Alex Kuhn announced

Staff Report

Alex Kuhn, 34, a Charles City High School graduate and a member of the Mason City Council, died Friday.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Details about his death had not been released by Sunday afternoon.

Alex Kuhn, 34, was born Dec. 13, 1981, and is the son of Mark and Denise Kuhn of rural Charles City, with whom he is a co-owner and operator of Kuhn Farms.

His father, Mark Kuhn, is a former state legislator and the current chairman of the Floyd County Board of Supervisors.

Alex Kuhn is survived by two sons, his parents, and a brother, Mason.

According to Alex Kuhn’s Linkedin profile, he graduated from Charles City High School in 2000 and Iowa State University in 2004.

He spent two years as a staff assistant to U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, from 2006 to 2008, and then was the campaign and marketing director of United Way of North Central Iowa from June 2008 to March 2011.

Since March 2011, he has worked for Henkel Construction in business development.

Kuhn has been on the Mason City Council since January 2012. He was in his second term after winning re-election in 2015.

In his time on the council, Kuhn was known for the work he did on a downtown redevelopment project that aims to bring in a 98-room hotel, commercial housing and more.

He is also known for his vote that contributed to the city’s rejection of an agreement with a company to build a $240 million pork processing plant in Mason City.

Kuhn had consistently said that Mason City wasn’t getting enough in the development agreement.

He also proposed a smoking ban in city parks, but the city’s Parks and Recreation Board instead passed a resolution urging people not to smoke in playgrounds.

Kuhn said the voluntary effort would protect children from secondhand smoke and reduce litter without implementing an ordinance that would be difficult to enforce.
