Charles City eighth graders raised $9,500 in total following a March 4 Trivia Night event, the Charles City Community School District announced on Twitter Tuesday morning.

Funds raised will go toward the students’ long-term goal of repairing the Riverside Cemetery’s historic, 110-year-old chapel. Total restoration is estimated to cost more than $250,000, including the cost of hiring a preservation specialist to oversee repairs to the chapel. Initial estimates following the event put the total amount fundraised closer to $5,000.

The students have previously told the Press they intend to continue Trivia Night as an annual event to benefit the Riverside Chapel restoration. Students will also be seeking grants to aid fundraising efforts.
