Charles City resident Stewart Dalton has announced he will run for a seat on the Floyd County Board of Supervisors.

“I’ve spent many years in social services, and I’ve spent time on advisory boards for social services in the county,” Dalton said. “I think I can offer some insight and fresh ideas.”

Dalton, a Democrat, received a human services degree from Upper Iowa University and has spent the past 12 years managing the group home facility for Spring Harbor Residential Services.

“I’m coming in with new ideas and experience about the largest expenditures in our county, which is social services,” Dalton said. “I also have a special needs daughter, so I have a little more insight in how it should work, what needs to be done, what we have to spend, and all the things members of the board would have to oversee.”

Dalton said the county’s other priorities include the continuing law enforcement center project being considered by the Board of Supervisors, and managing a bigger portion of health care expenses among county residents.

“Right now we’re taking more and more expenses as the (Medicaid Managed Care Organizations) are failing their duties, and the state keeps cutting back,” Dalton said. “Hopefully we can get some good ideas out there on how to approach this.”

One other Democrat, Roy Schwickerath, has declared he is running this year. The Democratic primary for county offices will be held June 5. Since there are two seats open on the Board of Supervisors this year, there can be up to two candidates from every party on the ballot.

Nomination papers for persons running for county office for the June party primaries are available in the county auditor’s office and can be filed March 5-28.

The supervisor seats open in the November election in Floyd County this year are those currently held by Doug Kamm, a Republican, and by Mark Kuhn, a Democrat.

Kuhn has announced he is not seeking re-election. Kamm has indicated he will likely run for another term, but has not made an official announcement.
