Charles City’s Madelyn Tjaden attended the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute and presented her paper about water quality in Haiti on April 30.

The Iowa Youth Institute is an event for high school students who are interested in developing solutions to solve the hunger crisis around the globe. To qualify for the event, Tjaden had to write a paper about one country and one hunger-related issue, and present a solution to the problem.

Tjaden came up with the solution of using ozone waste treatment to help improve water quality.

This year, the seventh annual World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute brought together 309 students from 134 high schools at Iowa State University.

Attendees at the event earn a $500 scholarship to attend Iowa State University and enroll in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Since the inception of the program, the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute has engaged more than 1,000 students from more than 225 schools across Iowa, and continues reaching and inspiring students across the state to fight hunger at home and abroad and to explore STEM career paths.
