Election Tuesday, June 5, will pick party nominations

By Bob Steenson, bsteenson@charlescitypress.com

Political party voters will choose their candidates for the fall election on Tuesday, June 5, when Iowa holds its party primary election.

Although there are hotly contested races at the state level, in Floyd County there should be few surprises.

The number of people running for their party’s nomination Tuesday in county races is in every case equal to or lower than the number of spots available, meaning that everyone who is running Tuesday should win a spot on the ballot in November.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Amanda Theilen, the Floyd County election clerk, said voters must be registered in the party in which they vote, but they can declare a party or change parties at the polling site.

Here are the Floyd County offices where there will be seats open for the Nov. 6 general election, and the candidates seeking party nominations for those seats on Tuesday:

  • County supervisor — two seats available, meaning there can be up to two candidates nominated from each party:

— Democrat: Stewart M. Dalton and Roy Schwickerath.

— Republican: Incumbent Douglas Kamm.

  • County treasurer:

— Democrat: Incumbent Frank H. Rottinghaus.

— Republican: No candidate.

  • County recorder:

— Democrat: No candidate.

— Republican: No candidate.

  • County attorney:

— Democrat: No candidate

— Republican: Incumbent Rachel Ginbey.

There will likely be additional names on the ballot in November as well. In Iowa, candidates running without listing a party have Aug. 6 to Aug. 29 to file nomination papers for county office, and July 30 to Aug. 17 for state and federal offices.

For example, Deborah Roberts, the incumbent Floyd county recorder, runs as a no-party candidate, and she has said she will seek re-election.

Mike Staudt, of rural Floyd, has said he will run for county supervisor as a no-party candidate.

At the state level, voters will be asked to make a number of decisions Tuesday regarding who they want to represent their parties in November, especially for the Democratic nominations for governor, U.S. House District 4 and secretary of state.

Here are the state races that will be on the party ballots:

  • Governor:

— Democrat: Cathy Glasson, Fred Hubbell, Andrea Andy McGuire, John Norris and Ross Wilburn. Nate Boulton’s name will also be on the ballot, but he has suspended his campaign.

— Republican: Incumbent Kim Reynolds.

— Libertarian: Jake Porter and Marco Battaglia.

  • U.S. House District 4:

— Democrat: Lean Jacobsen, John Paschen and J.D. Scholten.

— Republican: Incumbent Steve King and Cyndi Hanson.

— Libertarian: Charles Aldrich.

  • Iowa House District 52:

— Democrat: Incumbent Todd Prichard.

— Republican: No candidate.

  • Secretary of state:

— Democrat: Deidre DeJear and Jim Mowrer.

— Republican: Incumbent Paul D. Pate.

  • Auditor of state:

— Democrat: Rob Sand.

— Republican: Incumbent Mary Mosiman.

  • Treasurer of state:

— Democrat: Incumbent Michael L. Fitzgerald.

— Republican: No candidate.

  • Secretary of agriculture:

— Democrat: Tim Gannon.

— Republican: Incumbent Mike Naig, Chad Ingels, Craig Lang, Dan Zumbach and Ray Gaesser.

  • Attorney general:

— Democrat: Incumbent Tom Miller.

— Republican: No candidate.
