Nashua loses police chief to Bremer County

Nashua is searching for a new police chief after the City Council accepted the resignation of Travis Marvin during Monday night’s meeting.

Marvin has accepted a job with the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office. He will work his last day with the city on July 19 and begin work in Bremer County the following day.

“Nashua has been very good for me,” Marvin said, “but this is an opportunity I felt I just couldn’t pass up.”

Marvin has worked for the Police Department the past six years and he became the police chief last fall when he replaced Paul Becthold, who took a job in West Union.

“They’ve been great with training and education,” he said, “and the department has given me a lot of opportunities to develop as an officer and for advancement. I’ll always be appreciative of the time I’ve spent here.”

Several residents said they will miss Marvin and called it a sad day.

“I just want to thank Travis for (his) service to the community,” resident Doug Strike said at the end of the meeting.

City Council members voted Monday to appoint Ben Scholl as the department’s interim chief.

Scholl was hired in February, bringing the Nashua force to its full complement of three officers for the first time in almost 2½ years.

Last September, Nashua lost another police chief to another community, when hometown native Paul Becthold resigned to take a position as the police chief in West Union.
