A juvenile male accused of trying to steal a car ended up taking a dip in the Elks Lodge pond to try and escape police officers early Monday evening.

The Charles City Police Department reported that they were called at 6:40 p.m. Monday to the 2100 block of Clarke Street where they witnessed a person attempting to steal a car.

The youth broke a window in a vehicle in his attempt to steal it, police said, then when polie arrived he fled and was being chased on foot by officers when the youth went into the pond in an attempt to evade the officers.

The juvenile male had been subject to house arrest and had left his home, a police report said.

He was charged with attempted burglary of a motor vehicle, third degree; criminal mischief fourth degree; and interference with official acts.

“The juvenile was referred to the juvenile court authority and was sent to a facility,” the police report said.

Earlier police reports show that officers went to the 1600 block of Salzar Street at 4:40 p.m. to speak with a subject about an ongoing case; and police investigated a juvenile runaway in the 1600 block of Salzar Street at 6:22 p.m.

That location is within several blocks of the Elks Lodge, but police did not confirm that either of those events was related to the alleged attempted car theft.
