The Charles City Middle School Music Department presented its 2019 5th and 6th Grade Chorus Winter Concert Thursday night at North Grand Auditorium in Charles City.
The young vocalists were directed by Tara Dean, and accompaniment was provided by featured pianist Barbara Reinert.
The 5th graders opened the show with Meredith Wilson’s “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” followed by “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano and Mac Huff. They closed with Ruth Artman’s musical version of “The Night Before Christmas,” by Clement Clarke Moore.
The 6th graders opened up with “Winter Fantasy” by Jill Gallina, followed by “Three Men on Camelback” by Ann Ker, with some percussion provided by Zach Jensen and Ayden Bean. The 6th graders closed their set with “Dear Santa” by Jack and Jaima Kunz before the 5th and 6th grade combined chorus performed “Christmas Canon” by Johann Pachelbel and Paul O’Neil.
String accompaniment for “Christmas Cano” was provided by Libbie McKeag, Sophia Jensen and Elise White.
Once the younger students were done, the 7th and 8th graders took the stage.

A crew from Johnson Painting in Charles City works on the pergola in the Willson-Lorber Lions Club Rose Garden at the corner of Main Street and Riverside Drive earlier this week. The workers were sanding the wood in preparation for staining later in the week.
The garden was created in 1971 as a Lions Club community beautification project after the tornado of 1968, then renovated in 2013 and at that time named after George Lorber and Eb Willson, two Lions who had been instrumental in starting the project.
The park contains more than 150 rose plants in many varieties, benches and a brick walkway in addition to the pergola.
Lorber was a longtime Charles City school superintendent and Lions Club member who helped lead the way to rebuilding three school buildings after the tornado. He died in 2015. Willson, who died in 1996, was also a longtime Lion and owner of Starr Ice Cream Co. and Riverside Greenhouse.
