A man who listed his address as Mason City has been found guilty of two counts of sexual abuse and several other related charges for actions that took place in Charles City between March and May this year.

A Floyd County District Court jury found Wesley Perry Sanders-Lane, age 34, guilty as charged on six counts after a trial last held last week, Tuesday through Thursday.

Sanders-Lane was convicted of:

  • Two counts of third-degree sexual abuse, Class C felonies.
  • Two counts of domestic abuse assault, third or subsequent offense, both Class D felonies.
  • One charge of domestic abuse assault impeding the normal breathing or circulation of blood, causing bodily injury, a Class D felony.
  • Assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor.

According to court documents, Sanders-Lane got into a verbal argument on May 13 with the woman he was living with in Charles City, grabbed her head and “slammed her head into the wall.” He then grabbed her hair and pulled her head toward his exposed genitals.

After he was arrested, he was also charged with other offenses that took place in April and in a period from March to May in Floyd County.

While in custody, Sanders-Lane sent several hand-written letters to the judge, complaining about “crazy stories” and lies that were being told against him, but District Court Judge Chris Foy ruled that since Sanders-Lane was represented by counsel the court would not take any action on communications directly from the defendant.

Sanders-Lane has previously been convicted of domestic abuse assault (strangulation), a Class D felony, in Cerro Gordo County in September 2016; domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor, in Floyd County in January 2017; and assault causing injury or mental illness, a serious misdemeanor, in Webster County in February 2019.

District Court Judge DeDra Schroeder, who presided over the trial last week, set sentencing for Oct. 25. Sanders-Lane was represented by Matthew Pittenger of Mason City and the case was prosecuted by Floyd County Attorney Rachel Ginbey and Assistant Floyd County Attorney Randall Tilton.
