Charles City man pleads guilty to burglary assault

A Charles City man who was charged with burglary has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and the sentencing has been set for October.

Aaron Michael Romig, age 36, was charged with burglary in the first degree, a Class B felony, for an incident that took place May 26 in Charles City when Romig struck a person in a vehicle, causing pain and redness where he struck the person in the face.

In August, Romig pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary in the second degree, a Class C felony.

In return for the plea agreement, the Floyd County Attorney’s Office agreed to recommend that Romig be sentenced to a term in prison up to 10 years, fully suspended; a $1,375 fine plus 15% surcharge, fully suspended; probation for three to five years; substance abuse evaluation and follow-through on recommendations; a non-contact order for five years; restitution; and attending an anger management class.

The judge in the case is not required to follow the recommendation of the county attorney.

District Court Judge DeDra Schroeder accepted Romig’s guilty plea, ordered a presentencing investigation and set the sentencing hearing for Oct. 11 in Floyd County District Court.

Schroeder also ordered Romig released from custody under the supervision of the Iowa Department of Correctional Services until the sentencing date.
