Dylan James Mennenga

Dylan James Mennenga, age 28, was accused of entering an occupied structure in the 900 block of 9th Street in Charles City on Sept. 7, 2023, and stealing a set of golf clubs.

On that same day, the Nora Springs police chief attempted to pull Mennenga over in Nora Springs, but Mennega allegedly sped away at speeds more than 25 mph over the posted limit.

The next day, on Sept. 8, a search warrant was executed on Mennenga’s vehicle, and the stolen golf clubs and associated items including burglary tools were allegedly found.

Mennenga was charged with burglary in the second degree, a Class C felony; eluding while exceeding the speed limit by 25 mph or more, a Class D felony; and possession of burglary tools, an aggravated misdemeanor.

When Mannenga was arrested on Oct. 25 he allegedly was in possession of methamphetamine, and he was charged with possession of a controlled substance, third offense, a Class D felony.

In February this year, Mannenga was also charged with possession of a firearm as a felon, a Class D felony, as a result of a handgun that had also allegedly been found in his car during the September search.

Mennega pleaded guilty on March 1 to a charge of burglary in the third degree, and agreed to a recommendation of up to a five-year prison sentence in return for the burglary charge reduction from a Class C to a Class D felony, and the eluding and burglary tools possession charges being dropped.

He later also pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of a firearm as a felon in return for a recommendation that he also be sentenced to up to five years in prison on that count, but that it be served concurrently with the burglary charge.

Last week District Court Associate Judge Elizabeth Batey sentenced Mennenga on the burglary charge to an indeterminate term in prison not to exceed five years, and a fine of $1,025 plus 15% crime services charge, but suspended the fine.

She also ordered that the prison sentence be served concurrently with the sentence imposed in the possession of a firearm by a felon charge.

Batey also sentenced Mennenga to 60 days in jail on the possession of a controlled substance charge, with that sentence to also be served concurrently with the burglary sentence. An $855 fine plus 15% crime services surcharge was imposed but suspended.

A sentencing on the firearm possession case had also been set for last week, but was postponed until April 19 because Mannenga has a different attorney on that case, who was not available on the original sentencing date.
