An Illinois man recently arrested in Charles City on a Cook County warrant for first-degree murder has been returned to his home state.
Haniff K. Caldwell, age 27, was arrested by Charles City police on May 4 after officers were called to the area of C Street and 7th Avenue on a report of multiple people fighting, according to the daily police log.
“Caldwell of Rockford, Illinois, was arrested on a valid Cook County arrest warrant for homicide – willful kill with gun and assault,” according to the Police Department. He was being held in the Floyd County Jail without bail.
Caldwell was being sought in Illinois on a charge of first-degree murder with the intent to do great bodily harm, or knowing that his actions would cause death to an individual.
A hearing was held in Floyd County District Court on Monday, where Judge Gregg Rosenbladt ruled that Caldwell had knowingly and willingly waived formal extradition and agreed to be returned to Illinois, and ordered him to be transported back to Cook County by authorities from Illinois at that state’s expense.
On Thursday a Floyd County jailer reported that Caldwell had been picked up for transport back to Illinois.
According to the warrant from Cook County, Caldwell was to be considered potentially armed and dangerous. The Charles City Police Department report said it was assisted in the arrest by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
